The Production Process

Every piece of La Poterie de Taizé ceramics goes through a process shaped by patience, dedication, and decades of experience. What may look simple is, in reality, the result of many precise steps, each carried out with the same care – in the tradition of monastic craftsmanship that defines our roots.

The Clay

I am the Alpha (α), the beginning of every piece of ceramic: the clay is mixed!

Before it can be shaped at all, the clay is produced in the workshop in Taizé itself.

Our clay is made from a carefully balanced mixture of natural minerals such as feldspar and silica, combined with kaolin and water.

This process requires the utmost care and experience.

Step 1:

Mixing

A balanced clay mixture is created from various natural raw materials, without artificial additives. Purely mineral, organic, regional. The recipe has been refined over many years.

Step 2:

Pressing

To remove air bubbles and create an even, stable mass, the mixed clay is pressed and the remaining water is removed. This is a crucial step for the later quality of the product.

Step 3:

Cutting

The pressed clay is then cut into blocks. This creates the starting material for all subsequent steps. Each block is ready to be shaped into something new.

2. Shaping

On the potter’s wheel or using the casting process, the blocks are shaped by hand. Each product is made individually with a steady hand, a trained eye, and a feel for the material. The small differences in the result are unavoidable in genuine craftsmanship: they make each piece unique.

3. Drying

The freshly shaped pieces rest for several days so that the remaining moisture can slowly evaporate. This is the only way to keep the material stable and free from tension for the next stages of the process.

4. First Firing

The so-called bisque firing takes between 24 hours and five days, depending on the shape and size. At temperatures of up to 1000 °C, the product becomes durable and resistant. The piece is now ready for glazing.

5. Time for the Glaze

Each glaze is developed and mixed by hand at the monastery itself with great care. This practice has a long tradition: decades ago, the brothers of Taizé began experimenting with natural resources such as leaves and wood from the nearby forest to create colours and surfaces that harmonise with the surroundings of Taizé. Today, the glazes are made from natural minerals.

6. Glazing

The ceramics are dipped into the glaze by hand.

Our glazes consist exclusively of mineral components and contain no artificial additives, microplastics, or heavy metals. They are completely food-safe, robust, and durable. Each glaze reveals its true character only after the high firing: sometimes glossy and deep, sometimes matte and earthy, but always vibrant and harmonious.

7. Second Firing, the Completion

I am the Omega (Ω). In the final step, the product is fired at temperatures of up to 1280 °C for around 12 hours. The glaze fuses with the clay body, making the surface dense, food-safe, and either glossy or satin-matte. A finished piece full of craftsmanship, history, and soul.
